Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.
French illustrator Hervé Baille's style is distinguished by his highly personal interpretation of the urban landscape. On the one hand, the artist does not renounce drawing, creating a complex composition with a solid spatial structure determined by the interplay of the buildings' volumes. There is also a flair for detail, for the curious detail, a fundamental component of Baille's work. However, the artist does not renounce a certain pictorialism, created by light, transparent glazes that make the depiction bright and luminous.
Frédéric Marie Joseph Hervé Baille (born January 21, 1896, in Sète, France, and died June 3, 1974, in Paris) was a French illustrator and printmaker. He was named Peintre de la Marine (Peintre de la Marine) in 1947. A member of the Comics Artists Committee, he exhibited at the Salon des humoristes and participated in the imaginative art exhibitions of Lyon, Bordeaux, Barcelona, Brussels, and Berlin. Initially a prolific cartoonist, he later distinguished himself in illustrating literary works. In the 1940s, he created posters and flyers for Air France's advertising campaign.
