Henry Stanton Lynton - Untitled

The view presents a perspective of an everyday scene in a distant place, an oriental city. These types of scenes were very common during the Victorian era, and the Orient held great fascination during the English colonial era. The tendency to depict this unknown world led the artist to free himself from the social constructs of the Western bourgeois climate, entering into new and different landscapes. H.S. Lynton in this case creates a pleasing composition that fully immerses himself in Orientalist views. Regarding Lynton's pictorial style, we can say that the warm, softened tones are consistent with this type of theme. Colors like white, red, and blue dominate the painting, leaving little room for chiaroscuro contrasts. Lynton's attention focuses on the urban buildings, where an arch with a strong Arab influence stands out. Overall, we can define the work as having a style well within the context of the period. Henry Stanton Lynton, active between 1886 and 1912, was a Victorian artist highly regarded for his skillful Orientalist works. His works, in fact, are set against a landscape background, featuring ancient and classical oases. He specialized in watercolor and oil painting, traveled extensively, and produced many works in Europe and the Middle East.
