Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist A. Guidi is a leading exponent of genre scenes, specializing in the refined and elegant depiction of 18th-century scenes immersed in nature.
Guidi is truly a perfect interpreter of the genre scene in all its codified rules. Each of his works, in fact, marvelously illustrates eighteenth-century society with extraordinary representational power. Guidi's desire to capture the symbolic images of an era on canvas is expressed from the very beginning of his composition, in which the subject is always coherently linked to a lyrical and idyllic setting. The union between subject and setting is inseparable and further strengthened by the structure of the works, always constructed according to a rigorous perspective. It goes without saying that, in such a genre, descriptive clarity must be an essential characteristic of the pictorial process. Indeed, Guidi's works are characterized by a perfect naturalistic rendering, impeccable in the description of every single objective detail with a marked narrative verve. His style is also characterized by a remarkable softness of touch, through which the artist achieves a complete fusion of objects within the coherent atmospheric space of the work.
A. Guidi is an artist who stands out for his production of eighteenth-century genre scenes. His pictorial language, clearly based on academic training, allows him to develop compositions with great naturalism and descriptive precision, while maintaining a freshness of execution.
