Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color.
In this series of bas-reliefs, artist Goffredo Catraro achieves a remarkable synthesis of reality. The subjects are reduced to the essential; their forms are generic, as are their facial features. All this takes place in a very narrow, depthless space, occupied almost entirely by the figures. Despite the limited space, the subjects display a certain volumetric consistency and, above all, their bodies elongate, curve, and deform to set the rhythm of the composition.
Goffredo Catraro was an artist originally from Castelfidardo. He made his debut in 1962 with an exhibition at the Galleria Puccini in Ancona. That same year, an exhibition at the Galleria Gussoni in Milan launched his work nationally. A key milestone was the opening, together with his wife, of a workshop in Castelfidardo, where he created sculptures, gold and silver bas-reliefs, jewelry, and furnishings. Catraro's work has always attracted critical and public interest for the complexity of his workmanship and compositions, poised between figurative and abstract.
