Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting features a subject that draws on the hallmarks of Metaphysical art. Metaphysical art refers to a style of painting in which the image evokes desire and surprise, immersing itself in a reality of random objects to capture a deeper, more profound truth. Giorgio De Chirico was its pioneer in 1913. Here, the artist draws inspiration from this movement, creating a scene removed from reality and featuring a figure framed by a throne covered with a veil from which a pumpkin rises. In the foreground, the same vegetable rests on a two-dimensional windowsill.
As for the style of the work, we find a meticulous attention to detail, undoubtedly enhanced by the use of oil paint, which allows the artist greater freedom to experiment. The highly artificial light recalls the unnatural light found in Metaphysical paintings, which seeks to harmonize the forms. Compositionally, although there are empty spaces within the painting, the line and its details complete the work from an optical perspective. The depicted objects also seem to possess a secret symbolism.
Giuseppe Siccardi, born in Turin in 1937, began his career as an advertising graphic designer, also creating the graphic and advertising imagery for the renowned chocolate kisses with hazelnuts and the Pensierino d’Amore. He later moved to Padua. Giuseppe Siccardi always made a living from his art: a figurative and surreal landscape painter with a meticulous, almost Flemish style that was highly distinctive and widely acclaimed throughout Italy. He curated exhibitions and exhibited across Italy, receiving numerous awards and accolades. One of his largest works is the representation of Saint Anthony the Dying, which can be admired above the main portal of the Sanctuary of Saint Anthony in Arcella, Padua. He passed away in 2010 after a long and extremely rare illness.
