Description of the work
Description of the work
The “Still Life” genre emerged at the beginning of the 17th century. It consists of depicting compositions of inanimate subjects, in most cases flowers or fruit. While at the beginning of its history it provided painters with an opportunity to attempt a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, in contemporary art “Still Life” also becomes a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as will happen, for example, in Cubist avant-garde or in the work of Giorgio Morandi, the profound exploration of objects will culminate in a conceptual representation that goes beyond mere sensory data.
The style of the artist Giuseppe Mallia in his still lifes, but also in his depictions of animals and portraits, is essentially rooted in Hyperrealism. There is, in fact, a determination to objectively reproduce on canvas, with cool lucidity, the sensory data before his eyes. Giuseppe Mallia possesses a remarkable technique reminiscent of Flemish painting in the precision with which he reproduces various materials and surfaces and the effects of light falling on them. Despite its objective clarity and while avoiding overly pronounced atmospheric effects, Giuseppe Mallia’s technique naturally places the objects in space, with continuous and indistinct contours. Indeed, the subject emerges evocatively and theatrically from the dark background thanks to the action of light that gives form to the matter.
Giuseppe Mallia was born in 1957 in Caltanissetta. In 1976 he moved to Parma, where he lives and works. He is considered one of the leading exponents of Italian Hyperrealism. His body of work consists of still lifes, flowers, landscapes, and portraits of animals, painted with objective lucidity. His works are held in numerous private collections. Furthermore, the artist gives private lessons in hyperrealistic painting.
