Description of the work
Description of the work
The devastation brought about by the Second World War left a deep mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also manifested as an inability to communicate. For some artists, this problem resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, leading to the birth of Informal Art. The various informal movements are certainly linked to American Abstract Expressionism, especially regarding the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric ones. Their research is directed instead towards the material with which they compose their works.
In his versatile research and multifaceted artistic production, Giuseppe Cannizzaro explored several expressive languages within the realms of abstraction and informal art. In the case of this painting, the artist reaches a peak of experimentation, decisively abandoning any connection with perceptible reality to create a concrete work of pure abstraction. The work is entirely resolved through the artist's gestures. Indeed, its surface is completely monochromatic, based on a deep and dynamic blue tone. However, the paint is dense and substantial, allowing the artist to superimpose symbolic elements on the surface. In this way, a sign system is created that is hermetic and mysterious in its inconsistency, yet powerfully expressive in its incommunicability. All the more so because the aura of mystery is fueled by the hinted presence of the geometry of the circle and the triangle, which can only be distinguished through a profound reading, like apparitions on the blue surface.
Giuseppe Cannizzaro was born in Acquaro in 1910 and passed away in 2007. Always driven by a libertarian spirit and committed to experimenting with different expressive forms, he was also an acclaimed poet. His self-taught painting training, aligned with the contemporary avant-garde, took place mainly in Rome, where he became a member of the “Numero” group. It was in this context that he established himself by participating in numerous exhibitions, including international ones (London, New York, Boston, Damascus, Hamburg, Copenhagen). In 1967, he founded the secret art studio “Il Cacco,” in protest against the consumerism of expression and the art market, and “Lo Specillo,” a satirical magazine dedicated to figurative arts. In 2003, he was appointed a full member of the historic “Accademia Tiberina di Roma” and the “Accademia della Legion d’oro di Roma.” His works are held in public and private galleries in Italy and abroad. In May 2006, a Permanent Museum Exhibition was inaugurated at Palazzo Nieddu del Rio in Locri, retracing Giuseppe Cannizzaro's entire career through the works donated by the artist.
