Giuliano Grittini - Pope Francis

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

The work is a typical example of Giuliano Grittini's pictorial production. The artist creates his portraits drawing on an elegantly pop aesthetic. The subject becomes a true icon, even on a formal level, with the allusion to the golden background. The image is photographic, hyperrealistic, but is recontextualized through Grittini's elaboration. Grittini thus plays with the very concept of pop and recontextualizes it, associating it with other images, introducing overlays of written texts, and collages. The resulting work is visually striking and constitutes a new reflection on the poetics that shaped contemporary art in the 20th century.

Giuliano Grittini is an artist originally from Corbetta, where he was born in 1951. He trained at the School of Graphic Design in Milan and attended the studios of leading artists. He holds a degree in art printing and collaborates with several art and poetry magazines. He has held several exhibitions both nationally and internationally.
