Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is a composition of an abstract genre. Abstract derives from the Latin term “Abstrahere,” which means to extract, to pull out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists in eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Miró, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to its limits in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and pure colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instinctuality into images. Giuliano Giuman is currently one of the leading representatives of abstract artistic practice in Italy, and his research focuses precisely on the relationship between perception and pictorial transposition.
The “Vetrocromie” series has been created by Giuliano Giuman since 1982. A student of music before becoming a painter, the perception of sound is a central element in Giuman’s work. For this reason, the composition of these works necessarily begins with listening to music and the scores of the pieces themselves, before translating the sensations they generate onto the pictorial surface. In this series of works, glass takes center stage, as even in the dimension of the support it can create an osmotic relationship with the surrounding space and elevate the pictorial intervention to the level of a true environmental installation. This is because Giuliano Giuman’s language is based precisely on transparencies and the overlapping of layers of color and very light forms. In the figuration, linear geometric elements blend with more gestural and graphic interventions that also pave the way for an informal component.
Giuliano Giuman was born in Perugia in 1944. Since 1975, he has been experimenting with photography and photopainting. In 1981, he began working on the relationship between sound and image. He started the series of works on glass, also using it for installations in large spaces or for interior architecture. In 2000, Alitalia organized a solo exhibition by Giuman at New York’s Kennedy Airport. In Milan, he created “The Crystal Garden,” a conservatory with fountains, sculptures, and plays of light and water. “Three” is a glass sculpture over 9 meters high, located in a large industrial area near Padua, and for the new Science Center of Perugia, he created “Archimedes,” a glass wall illuminated by reflected sunlight with a rotating mirror. He has held around two hundred exhibitions, both solo and group.
