Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations for artists of every era. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a research into space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then on the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century; up to the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work is based on a total naturalistic rendering of the landscape, in which, however, the artist also lets his own contemporary sensibility prevail. Through a remarkable technical quality, Gino Grignani represents the view in every detail, immersing it in a coherent atmosphere guaranteed by the tonal values of the color. Usually, as in this case, Gino Grignani's landscapes are toned in cold colors and the light that bathes them is dull. There is, in this artist, almost a sense of sublime dismay in the face of the greatness of the landscape. We can also infer this from the way the human presence, tiny compared to Nature, is relegated to the background within the economy of the composition. Formally, the touch is extremely rapid and cursive, endowing the work with a character of freshness and immediacy. Furthermore, the artist's vision goes beyond a linear perspective. Grignani, trying to convey the complexity of human vision, constructs a spheroidal space that tends to compress the elements at the extremes. All this leads us to state that Gino Grignani's landscape painting is not idealized, but rests on solid realistic foundations.
Gino Grignani is a painter who practices very traditional genres such as landscape painting. However, his manner makes the views extremely lively and spirited, thanks to a rapid application of paint inspired by Impressionism and a contemporary, realistic sensibility in the composition.
