Giorgio De Chirico - Horses

The work depicts two horses side by side, both standing upright with their front legs raised, in the center of a beach. The calm sea opens up behind them, while further in the distance an ancient ruin reminiscent of classical architecture can be glimpsed. In the foreground, on the right, appear two fragments of a marble column. Details, such as a red cloth tied to one of the saddles and moved by the wind, contribute to giving movement to the composition. The scene is suspended, as if time had stopped.

The work presents a formal balance typical of metaphysical painting, with a measured use of colors and shapes. The setting evokes timeless atmospheres, in which classical elements such as ruins become symbols of memory and mystery. The composition is orderly and clean, and the technique on gold leaf enhances the surface, giving the image a luminous and uniform quality.

Giorgio De Chirico (1888-1978) was an Italian painter, sculptor, and writer, considered the founder of Metaphysical Painting. He is known for having created a unique artistic language, mixing classical elements with a modern and irrational vision. His work stands out for a deep philosophical and mythological reflection, expressed through recurring symbols such as Italian squares, arches, trains, and, naturally, mannequins. His work had an enormous influence on 20th-century art, inspiring many artists.
