Giorgio Bonaffini - Interior Exterior

In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is simultaneously charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In Giorgio Bonaffini's paintings, abstract and figurative often blend almost seamlessly. In the "Frammenti" series, the artist invents original combinations of architectural elements, but everything is transfigured into an extremely experimental language, always striving for strong expressiveness.

In the "Frammenti" series, Giorgio Bonaffini's compositions draw inspiration from a highly original interpretation of architectural elements. The figurative element remains, but in a totally abstract recontextualization. Different objects overlap in an extremely complex space, heavily influenced by Cubist exploration, constructed on multiple directions and viewpoints. Within these multidimensional boxes, the architectural elements break down and open up onto the plane, giving rise to complex compositions. Furthermore, the rendering, from a formal standpoint, tends to be abstract and synthetic, to the point of bordering on the informal, in some cases.

Giorgio Bonaffini was born in Curtatone in 1921 and died in Mantua in 1996. His artistic production is focused on an in-depth study and interest in architecture, which returns in his works in a modern and original recontextualization.
