Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the cityscape was already present in Medieval and Modern times, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting from the 19th century. We recall how, immediately after the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also gave great importance to the everyday, to daily life, with a certain predilection, however, towards the frenzy of the city, the crowd, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. Gianni Testa, a Roman painter, specializing above all in the subject of the horse, in many of his works was also inspired by views of his city.
The main characteristic of Gianni Testa's pictorial language is the excited dynamism that he expresses above all in the subject most congenial to him, the group of horses in motion. However, we can observe, in this beautiful urban view, how he does not lose his expressive vehemence even when dealing with a static subject. The accentuated pictorialism remains, which, constantly in Gianni Testa's work, dissolves forms, reducing them to a synthesis of pure chromatic matter. While in works of movement the dissolution of form tends to emphasize the strength and vigor of the subjects, in this case it is useful to identify very strong atmospheric vibrations in the space and on the buildings. This type of interpretation is confirmed by the chromatic range used in this work. While in the groups of horses in motion Testa tends towards fiery tones, in this Roman view, instead, he uses a scale of grays suitable for the representation of a cold and rainy day.
Gianni Testa is an artist born in Rome in 1936, where he still lives and works. During his career he has participated several times in the Biennale and the Quadriennale of Rome and the Triennale of Milan. He has exhibited his works in numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad (Germany, Basel, New York, Philadelphia). He has received numerous awards and recognitions, such as the career award presented to him by Vittorio Sgarbi. In 2014 he was the protagonist of a retrospective exhibition at the Vittoriano Complex in Rome presented by Claudio Strinati.
