Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations for artists of every era. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a study of space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then with the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century; and finally with the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The style of the painter Gianfranco Campestrini relies heavily on color and brushwork. The brushstroke is quick and cursive, outlining the landscape with great freshness and immediacy. Through quick hatching, the painter manages to fill the scene with luminous and atmospheric vibrations, giving an immediate impression of the view. The entire surface of the canvas is unified by a great chromatic coherence, and space, freed from the cage of perspective, is defined through the tonal transitions of color.
Gianfranco Campestrini was a Milanese painter born in 1901 and passed away in 1979. He trained at the Brera Academy under the tutelage of Cesare Tallone, Ambrogio Alciati, and his father, Alcide Davide Campestrini. He was a teacher for a long time, both at the Scuola degli Artefici di Brera and at the Liceo Artistico delle Orsoline. He devoted himself mainly to landscape and portraiture. Some of his paintings are preserved at the Quadreria dei benefattori dell’Ospedale Maggiore and in the art collections of the Fondazione Cariplo.
