Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This view by Gianfranco Antoni exemplifies the popular vein typical of his painting. Antoni is a painter deeply connected to the people and objects of a simple, popular world, which he interprets with a simple style rooted in primordial values. In this landscape, too, we note the basket of lobsters as the protagonist, which the painter renders with a candid realism and vivid pictorial effects.
Gianfranco Antoni was a Florentine painter from 1925 to 1992. His recurring themes are linked to a simple and humble world: figures of common people, everyday objects. The artist interprets this world with an equally simple style of painting that could be described as naive due to its spontaneity and pursuit of ingenuity. However, Antoni manages to enliven his works with a realism of delicate pictorial effects.
