Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a research into space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then on atmospheric rendering, in the Cinquecento; up to the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The artist Gene Pompa drew precisely from this last
school, that of Impressionism, in an exuberantly polychromatic interpretation, full of light.
The style of Master Gene Pompa is extremely refined and original. He starts from a type of Impressionistic representation of nature, with the intention of capturing every chromatic and luminous vibration, but he goes beyond it in the development of a highly experimental technique. First of all, his brushwork can be considered Divisionist, since each individual chromatic note is detached from the others and the viewer is left with the task of recomposing the image in their eye. In this way, Gene Pompa's works result in true kaleidoscopes of colors, brilliant and extremely luminous. Also in composition, in fact, this artist clearly drew from the geometricism of Seurat and Signac, the most important exponents of French Pointillism. While as regards the immersion and sacredness that pervades the feeling of nature expressed in his works, it makes us think more of an Italian Divisionist like Giovanni Segantini. Another peculiarity of Gene Pompa lies, then, in the use of the palette knife, which, by guaranteeing relief to the pictorial surface, makes the representation even more suggestive. The painting transcends the space of the work and enters directly into the space of the viewer.
Gene Pompa was born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1952. He trained by copying the works of the great masters of the past, until, from the '90s, he developed his unmistakable palette knife technique that makes his works three-dimensional. In 1998, he opened his Art'è Gene studio-gallery in Rome. He has participated in more than five hundred exhibitions, both national and international. Worth noting, in 2013, the monograph published by Giorgio Mondadori Editore and, in 2014, the catalog curated by Vittorio Sgarbi.
