Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in their own right begin to appear in “still lifes,” a genre that comes to light at the beginning of the 17th century. Later, painters’ interest in the floral world, especially among the Impressionists, grows ever greater, as it provides an extraordinary opportunity to capture chromatic and luminous vibrations. Thus, flowers begin to appear not only in vases but also immersed in their natural landscape. While at the beginning of its history it provided painters with a pretext to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, in contemporary art the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
The work highlights the Expressionist tendency of the artist Milani and, in this case, by focusing on the theme of flowers, manages to reach remarkable expressive heights within this stylistic register. The composition is entirely compressed into the foreground, allowing no room for spatial depth. The painter’s aim is not to reproduce the visual appearance of the flowers, but to capture their very essence in a highly evocative representation. To this end, the application of paint consists of short strokes of effervescent material, imbuing the entire subject with profound expressive vibrations. The visual appearance is thus completely transcended in a complex conception of painting in which the artist’s own gesturality also plays a fundamental role. From a more purely aesthetic point of view as well, the composition resolves into a sparkling polychromy.
The artist G. Milani, as we can see from the analysis of the work, is distinguished by an Expressionist verve characterized by rapid, gestural painting and textured, polychromatic strokes.
