Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations for artists of every era. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a study of space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then with the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century; and finally with the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work is based on a completely naturalistic rendering of the landscape, in which, however, the artist also allows his own contemporary sensibility to prevail. With remarkable technical skill, Gino Grignani represents the view in every detail, immersing it in a coherent atmosphere guaranteed by the tonal values of the color. Usually, as in this case, Gino Grignani's landscapes are set in cool colors and the light that bathes them is dull. In this artist, there is almost a sense of sublime dismay in the face of the grandeur of the landscape. We can also infer this from the way the human presence, tiny compared to Nature, is relegated to the background within the economy of the composition. Formally, the brushwork is extremely rapid and cursive, giving the work a character of freshness and immediacy. Furthermore, the artist's vision goes beyond linear perspective. Grignani, seeking to convey the complexity of human vision, constructs a spherical space that tends to compress the elements at the extremes. All this leads us to state that Gino Grignani's landscape painting is not idealized, but rests on solid realist foundations.
Gino Grignani is a painter who works in very traditional genres such as landscape. However, his manner makes the views extremely lively and spirited, thanks to a rapid brushwork of Impressionist inspiration and a contemporary, realist sensibility in the composition.
