Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the cityscape was already present in Medieval and Modern times, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting from the 19th century. We recall how, immediately after the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also gave great importance to the everyday, to daily life, with a certain predilection, however, towards the frenzy of the city, the crowd, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. This work by Giacomo De Michelis offers a beautiful view of the Spanish Steps in Rome.
Also in this work, inspired by a Roman view, we can appreciate the remarkable pictorial quality of the artist Giacomo De Michelis. His language is based largely on the expressive qualities of color. The artist almost entirely eliminates drawing to build the subject through a dense chromatic impasto with dynamic nuances. Thus we can appreciate how the entire space of the work is set on a coherent chromatic range of blues, violets, and grays, whose tones have a value, more than realistic, spiritual and guarantee unity to the entire composition. From the point of view of form, the application is very fast and cursive and gives us an image full of executive freshness.
The artist Giacomo De Michelis, born in 1935, had a very adventurous life. During his career he studied under Fusco, Moretti, Omiccioli and had the opportunity to meet Dalí, Picasso and other masters. He was also an amateur actor during the 1970s, appearing in films such as “Lo scopone scientifico” by Luigi Comencini and “Gli altri racconti di Canterbury” by Mino Guerrini.
