Giuseppe Colonello - Grado Cemetery

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. In his treatment of landscape, the artist Giuseppe Colonello demonstrates how his pictorial practice is firmly rooted in the Italian figurative tradition, with a high classical sense of the naturalistic rendering of sensory data.

Giuseppe Colonello's landscapes demonstrate remarkable quality both in composition and in pictorial technique. The execution of the work exudes a classical influence, drawing on the Italian pictorial tradition, particularly the Renaissance. The composition is highly dynamic, built on deep perspective and an ideal, harmonious balance between the elements. Indeed, the artist depicts large portions of landscape that fade into the horizon, blending effortlessly. Colonello masterfully defines space through subtle shifts in tone, framing the entire landscape in a coherent, unified atmosphere. Consequently, the role of light is crucial, creating a striking interplay of shadows and nuances. This artist's pictorial style is meticulous in achieving a perfect naturalistic rendering, yet employs a highly painterly, impressionistic touch to lend a fresher feel to the composition. The chromatic palette is modulated consistently with the atmospheric conditions, which vary depending on the season depicted.

Giuseppe Colonello was a painter originally from Udine, born in 1903 and died in 1977. An artist with an excellent academic education, he lived for several years in Naples, where he acquired an extraordinary technique for achieving a perfect naturalistic rendering of his subjects.
