Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of the landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations for artists of every era. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of the landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a research into space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then on the rendering of atmosphere in the Cinquecento; up to the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The style of the painter Franco Carenti necessarily starts from the sensory data obtainable from reality, which the artist however transfigures by filtering them through his own sensibility. In fact, we can observe how the representation of this portion of the village landscape is substantially realistic, but everything seems immersed in an atmosphere of almost metaphysical suspension. This effect is produced primarily by the composition, which offers, in a close-up shot, a narrow space, almost entirely occupied by buildings and where no human presence is detected. Everything has the character of a heaviness and a static immobility, devoid of life, which makes the dimension explored by the artist even more magical and symbolic. Consistently, the structure of the painting is built on precise lines of a geometric character, which give life to concrete solid forms in space. But fundamental, for Carenti's poetics, is also his pictorial application, which delicately synthesizes the objects, eliminating superfluous details and shifting the representation into a delicate balance between abstraction and reality. The brushstroke, in fact, results at times sketchy and dense with matter. On the same level is also the chromatic range, tuned to an abstract uniformity of grays.
Franco Carenti is an artist originally from Sardinia who trained at the Institute of Art in Sassari and attended, in the 1960s, the Sassari school formed by artists such as Stanis Dessy and Ausonio Tanda. Carenti has mainly dealt with landscape painting in a personal language suspended between realism and symbolism. He has collaborated for a long time with the Il Cancello gallery, exhibiting his works throughout Italy.
