Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s, encompassing all areas of artistic research. In terms of a discourse more properly related to the visual arts, surrealism presents itself as a desire to investigate the human subconscious and pour it into the work of art through a process of automatic writing based on dream analysis. Consequently, surrealist works of art offer the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a formal rendering of a hyperrealistic nature, precisely to accentuate, paradoxically, the illusory and ambiguous character of the surreal dimension.
From this work with a highly elaborate iconography, we can appreciate how the artist Francis wants to evoke a true vision, one that has the characteristics of the fantastic and the grotesque. For this reason, drawing on the surrealist tradition, his formal language is strongly figurative, that is, evocative of concrete images, even if belonging to another dimension, one that is not that of the sensible world. However, to heighten the fantastic tones, this figurative concreteness undergoes expressive deformations on the part of the artist. Thus, the figures are elongated in proportion and their physiognomy takes on caricatural, even monstrous traits in some cases. The visionary element is also accentuated from the point of view of the brushwork, which is highly elaborate, in a painterly style that does not undermine the concreteness of the images, but nevertheless gives them a vivid, highly dynamic rendering. From a chromatic point of view, there is a great tonal coherence based on grays, apart from a few flashes of brighter color.
From the analysis of this work, we can say that the painter Francis is an artist who draws on the surrealist line and loves to evoke visions in the tones of the fantastic and the grotesque. His iconographies are highly elaborate and express a great creative attitude that is also nourished by literary citations. His language is predominantly figurative, supported by a vibrant painterly style.
