Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers or plants in general as an independent subject begin to appear within “still lifes,” a genre that comes to light at the beginning of the 17th century. Later, painters’ interest in the floral and plant world, especially with the Impressionists, grows increasingly strong, as it provides an extraordinary opportunity to capture chromatic and luminous vibrations. Thus, flowers and plants are depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While at the beginning of its history it provided painters with a pretext to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the subject of flowers and plants also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
Francesco Matera’s style is linked to the quality of his subjects, which always stem from the countryside with which the artist feels a strong connection. For this reason, the images that come from his senses or his memory are always extremely concrete, possessing a tangible realism. In fact, as far as composition is concerned, Matera’s works are always based on a solid drawing structure in which the contours are defined by a clear black line. In this way, the objects acquire a strong plastic structure that determines their concreteness and prominence. As for the paint application, the artist fills these real presences with life through a highly complex and dynamic treatment of color, which sometimes even leads him to a textured, palette-knife application. The chromatic coherence of the works is also extraordinary, conveying the poetry of an existence linked to the earth and the warmth of the sun.
The union that occurs in Francesco Matera, between the concreteness of the structures and the solidity of the dense, textured color in a painting devoted to the genuineness of a rural world, reveals a strong inspiration from the French painter Paul Cézanne.
