Description of the work
Description of the work
The work exhibits a pursuit of naturalism typical of the Italian Renaissance and other classicist movements. One of the most important concepts in the history of artistic production, in fact, has been that of "mimesis," or the human need to imitate and reproduce nature, that which surrounds us. Nature refers to everything that can be grasped through the five senses—in short, phenomenal reality. Figurative and naturalistic trends in art can be considered those that, in the representation of the world, adhere most closely to this objective and sensorial dimension, leaving little room for abstraction and subjective interpretation.
In this work by Francesca Capitini, the reference to Renaissance art is evident in the central group. This group is compact in a solid pyramidal structure, composed of subjects with a monumental plasticity, a clear reference to the later phase of the Renaissance. Everything, however, is contextualized in a personalized interpretation. Even the perspective space in the background is subject to arbitrary application. Furthermore, the entire work is created with an evanescent texture designed to evoke a bygone dimension. The same goes for the antique patina, which the artist carefully creates to accentuate the poetic value of the reference.
Francesca Capitini was born in Assisi in 1978. She trained as an artist in Spello with the maestro Elvio Marchionni, who introduced her to the revival of Umbrian Renaissance painting, using fresco techniques. She achieved considerable popularity after creating a fresco of the Nativity in the Chapel of the Relics in the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi.
