Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on a pop aesthetic in its use of famous or mass-produced images and their artistic reworking. Pop Art emerged in the United States in the second half of the 20th century as a result of artists' interest in and critique of the contemporary "consumer society." All expressions of Pop Art presuppose a sort of double bond with the world of consumerism and mass media. On the one hand, the artwork is reduced to a mere consumer product, thanks to the use of advertising language in the works and their serial reproduction through mechanical processes. On the other hand, as in this case, the mass-produced images themselves become works of art, as a more genuine and truthful expression of the new society and thanks to the artist's recontextualization.
All of artist Felipe Cardena's work adheres to a pop aesthetic, a form he invented and which recurs throughout his work. The mass-produced images are of flowers, taken directly from the media (newspapers, comics, advertisements) and assembled in a deliberately kitsch collage with bold colors. Atop this rug is placed the actual pop icon (in this case, an image with a classicist aesthetic), also taken from the newspapers. With this collage, the medium is directly transformed into a work of art through the artist's intervention, through a deliberately provocative aesthetic somewhat reminiscent of the floral exaggerations of Bollywood cinema.
Felipe Cardena is a Spanish artist born in Balaguer in 1979. His identity is unknown, but his works are now internationally renowned. His first major exhibitions were Vade Retro, curated by Vittorio Sgarbi, and Street Art Sweet. Towards the end of 2007, the large-scale Power Flower project was born, which involved recovering popular images from various contexts and juxtaposing them with a bright floral backdrop.
