Description of the work
Description of the work
Cleopatra was the queen of Egypt and one of the most iconic figures in ancient history. The queen belonged to the Ptolemaic dynasty, the Macedonian family that ruled Egypt after the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC. In 48 BC, after Julius Caesar arrived, she allied with him and their relationship was not only political but also romantic, which also led, from an artistic and literary point of view, numerous artists to draw inspiration from their story. After 44 BC, at the death of Caesar, Mark Antony became her ally and lover. Iconographically, the queen in Egyptian representations, Cleopatra is often depicted as a pharaoh-queen, with royal and divine attributes. She wears the Nemes (striped headdress), the crown of Hathor, and is often accompanied by symbols of royalty such as the flabellum and the shepherd's crook. Some statues and reliefs represent her with the vulture-shaped headdress, associated with the goddess Mut or the goddess Isis, to emphasize her divinity. Her symbolism approaches the symbol of seduction and power.
Eva Hodinova's style is very particular and in this case, indeed, the woman represented is the queen of Egypt. Her image, however, is almost completely obscured by the overlying material. In her works, they look to an innate sensitivity to color together with the ability to insert the materialistic aspect of strong emotional impact with metaphorical intentions.
Born in Prague, Eva Hodinova moved to Italy in 1968. She graduated in 1964 at Pragoděv in Prague, subsequently attended František Emler's atelier in Prague to then attend the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. Beyond her education in the artistic field, she attended numerous courses, including those of engraving, restoration, mural fresco and Raku ceramics. Currently, she boasts numerous solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous international art competitions. Furthermore, she managed the Angerese Cultural Center and the Liberty Art Studio Gallery of Angera from 1980 to 2016. She is a member of Atelier Capricorno in Cocquio Trevisago, is part of the Association of Free Artists of the province of Varese and the Association of Ceramics Artists SVUK-Prague Czech Rep. She was included in the Sgarbi collection for her drawings and prints, in addition to her works published in the art book “The Artists in the Sgarbi Collection”. She is a member of the Museo della Permanente in Milan.
