Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout history. First and foremost, a portrait is a description of the represented subject, an attempt to faithfully and naturally capture their features and individual characteristics. As artistic exploration gradually evolved, the physiognomic description of the subject was complemented by a psychological one. Thus, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective inquiry into the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction introduced by contemporary art have supported this type of inquiry.
Ernesto Treccani’s artistic language tends to minimize phenomenal reality, but this exercise of reducing sensory data allows the artist to look beyond the appearance of things and capture their true essence. What remains is the spiritual and emotional core of the subject with whom Treccani seeks to connect, stripping away any formal embellishment and leaving only an elegant trace to identify the subject. This trace consists of a sinuous line that builds the image in a nervous and dynamic manner. It is complemented by color applied in light, balanced patches.
Ernesto Treccani was a Milanese artist born in 1920 and passed away in 2009. He founded the magazine Corrente, around which gathered a group of artists including Birolli, Guttuso, Migneco, Sassu, and later Cassinari and Morlotti. His first solo exhibition was in 1949. In 1978, he established the Fondazione Corrente, a center for research and cultural initiatives, and above all, for archiving documents related to the Realism movement.
