Ernesto Marinoni - Old

The painting depicts two figures in the foreground, probably traveling musicians or street performers, positioned in front of a large stone bridge and illuminated by a clear, surreal light. The first, wrapped in a long green coat, holds a white bag, while the other plays a guitar. Beside them is a small black dog, a recurring element in the artist's other works. The overall atmosphere is suspended, almost theatrical.

The figures are deliberately depicted out of proportion, with bold features and simplified forms that give them an almost caricatured appearance. The composition is frontal and focused on the subjects, who fill the scene with a strong but static presence. The colors are muted and cool, dominated by the blue of the sky and the green of the coat, with some warm touches in the faces and clothing.

Very little is known about Ernesto Marinoni: there are no certain biographical details or in-depth critical studies documenting his career. Some works attributed to him show a constant interest in simple settings, villages, ports, and figures from everyday life, observed with a direct and personal gaze. In this painting, the artist chooses to depict two marginalized figures in a sober yet striking tone, relying on an essential and expressive style.
