Description of the work
Description of the work
The “Still Life” genre emerged at the beginning of the seventeenth century. It consists of depicting compositions of inanimate subjects, in most cases flowers or fruit. While at the beginning of its history it provided painters with an opportunity to attempt a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, in contemporary art “Still Life” also becomes a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as will happen, for example, in Cubist avant-garde or in the work of Giorgio Morandi, the profound exploration of objects will culminate in a conceptual representation that goes beyond mere sensory data.
Enrico Maioli’s poetics is straightforwardly realistic, based essentially on the faithful reproduction of subjects from life. In this context, he can rely on his excellent painting technique, which allows him to impeccably record sensory data on the support. Enrico Maioli starts from a solid drawing structure through which he manages to endow the subjects with solid volumes that claim a concrete space within the generally neutral background. The plastic values are enhanced by the sense of form, almost geometric, that characterizes this painter’s work. Enrico Maioli also demonstrates a particular artistic sensitivity in his application of color. Indeed, without ever deviating from his deeply realistic intentions, his brushwork is dynamic and fluid, bringing the objects to life. These objects are charged with luminous and atmospheric vibrations through a painterly touch that allows for some incursions into a more impressionistic style, while always maintaining the concreteness of a deeply realistic representation. The use of light is also excellent, as is the distribution of shadows and the reflections on the surfaces.
As we can see from the analysis of his works, Enrico Maioli is an artist deeply committed to a mimetic conception of art. For Maioli, painting means recording sensory data as faithfully as possible. For this reason, his realistic language is based on an outstanding painting technique that combines impeccable drawing from life with a vivid and vibrant application of color.
