Description of the work
Description of the work
The “Still Life” genre emerged at the beginning of the 17th century. It consists of the representation of compositions of inanimate subjects, in most cases flowers or fruit. If at the beginning of its history it was an opportunity for painters to try their hand at a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art “Still Life” also becomes a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as will happen, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the profound research on objects will be aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the simple sensory data.
That of Enrico Maioli is a frankly realist poetics based, essentially, on the faithful reproduction of subjects from life. In this context he can count on his excellent painting technique which allows him to impeccably record the sensory data on the support. Enrico Maioli starts from a solid drawing structure through which he manages to endow the subjects with solid volumes that win a concrete space in the generally neutral background. The plastic values are enhanced by the sense of form, almost geometric, that characterizes the work of this painter. Even in the application of color Enrico Maioli demonstrates a particular artistic sensitivity. Indeed, without ever straying from his deeply realist intentions, his brushstroke is dynamic and moving, in such a way as to make the objects come alive. The latter, in fact, result full of luminous and atmospheric vibrations in a pictorial touch that allows itself some incursions into a more impressionistic style, always maintaining, however, the concreteness of a deeply realist representation. Excellent is also the use of light, in the distribution of shadows and in the reflections of reflective surfaces.
As we can see from the analysis of his works Enrico Maioli is an artist deeply linked to a mimetic conception of the work of art. For Maioli painting means recording the sensory data in the most faithful way possible. For this reason his realist language is based on a remarkable painting technique that combines an impeccable drawing from life with a lively and vibrant application of color.
