Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This painting is part of a series of landscapes by Enea Garagnani in which color is the absolute protagonist. The subject is constructed through dense brushstrokes of a material color. Thus, the painter conveys the full concreteness of the earth and of a reality, whether exotic or even rural, onto the support. His pictorial style is powerfully synthetic, and the landscape follows the undulating rhythm of his brushstrokes. The colors are strong, verging on naturalism, characterizing Garagnani's style with a distinct expressionist edge.
Enea Garagnani was a painter and gallery owner from Bologna, born in 1905. His works have been exhibited in various exhibitions in Italy (Forlì 1969, Faenza 1970, Terni 1971, Spoleto 1972, Castelfranco Emilia 1973, Florence 1972, Massa Carrara 1971 and 1973, Reggio Emilia 1974, Bussolengo 1975, Milano Marittima 1975). Several paintings are held in the municipality of La Maddalena in Sardinia, in Spain, Greece, the USA, France, Morocco, and Tunisia. Other works are held in private collections in Bologna.
