Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by the Second World War left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, which resulted in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
Emma Azzi's Informal Art has its own stylistic connotation that makes it extremely recognizable. As we can see, this work exhibits a significant difference that marks its distance from historical Informal Art: an exploration of color, rather than material. The painted surface is resolved through a series of colored glazes that create a fluid space. And it is within this fluid environment that bioform-like organisms take shape, perhaps organic or inorganic substances adapted to aquatic life.
Emma Azzi is a painter from Lodi whose artistic language draws inspiration from American Abstract Expressionism and Informal Art. Her research focuses on painting techniques and the use of color.
