Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout all eras. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the represented subject, an attempt to faithfully and naturally reproduce their physiognomy and individual characteristics. As artistic exploration gradually evolved, physiognomic description was accompanied by psychological exploration. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture also became a means of introspective inquiry into the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction introduced by contemporary art have further supported this type of inquiry.
A beautiful lithograph that showcases Emilio Greco’s technique not only as a sculptor but also in his graphic works. Here we can appreciate how the artist combines subtle, flowing lines with intricate hatching to define volumes and areas of shadow. In this way, the image remains essential while possessing great expressive power and sculptural quality. Indeed, even in his graphic works, Emilio Greco’s art is characterized by an extraordinary classical sense of representation. For him, artistic creation meant establishing a mimetic relationship with Nature, interpreting sensory data according to principles of balance and harmony. Yet he also possessed an innate sense of contemporaneity, evident in his capacity for expressive synthesis and the existential tension that arises from it.
Emilio Greco was an artist born in Catania in 1913 and passed away in Rome in 1995. Primarily engaged in sculpture, he was also a writer and illustrator. His work focused mainly on the female nude. His series of Bathers and female portraits is renowned. For a period, he taught at the Accademia di Carrara and achieved fame with the monument to Pinocchio and the Fairy, created in 1956 for the town of Collodi.
