Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the heart of artistic exploration. Since classical antiquity, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been one of the primary goals of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, transcending all eras and artistic movements. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations characteristic of the Renaissance and various forms of classicism, which aim for a faithful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central subject in the new aesthetic conceptions introduced by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
The work is an example of the many bas-reliefs that Emilio Greco dedicated to the study and exploration of female forms. This exploration focused on volume and movement. This series of works demonstrates how fundamental Greco’s classical training was to his career. The artist pursues an ideal of pure, harmonious beauty through the creation of a balanced, almost geometric volume within the composition, which comes to life thanks to soft modeling that softens its forms. His exploration of naturalistic rendering reaches extraordinary levels of execution thanks to Greco’s technique, which allowed him to reproduce every detail with grace and elegance. The search for a broad classical aesthetic, with a sacred aura and mythical origins, is evident in the physiognomies and expressions of these female figures.
Emilio Greco was a Catanese artist born in Catania in 1913 and who passed away in Rome in 1995. Primarily engaged in sculpture, he was also a writer and illustrator. His exploration focused mainly on the female nude. His series of Bathers and female portraits is renowned. For a period, he taught at the Accademia di Carrara and achieved fame with the monument to Pinocchio and the Fairy, created in 1956 for the town of Collodi. He passed away in 1995.
