Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the equestrian monument, or the man on horseback, has very ancient origins. It dates back to the classical world, the earliest example of which is the "Rampin Knight," and it had a fundamental political importance for Roman art. Generally, these are sculptures in the round, but there are also cases where this subject appears on painted supports. The theme of the man on horseback has pervaded the entire history of art, not only Western art, and has become a subject of research for contemporary artists such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, and Aligi Sassu.
Elio Petazzi is a figurative painter with a highly classical approach to painting, based on timeless principles of balance, harmony, and naturalism. The achievement of these characteristics is ensured by the fact that Elio Petazzi can be considered a master of drawing and color. Through his confident line, the artist creates a coherent space in his works, endowed with tangible spatial depth. Color intervenes on this solid structure, making everything extremely alive and vibrant. First, through subtle passages of tone, the painter manages to create a coherent and unified atmosphere in which the figures blend effortlessly. Furthermore, his line is extremely mobile and rapid, capable of ensuring immediacy and freshness in the composition. Finally, Petazzi's palette completes his pursuit of naturalistic rendering with bright, luminous hues.
Cornelio Mario Petazzi, known as Elio, was a painter originally from Busto Arsizio, born in 1912 and died in 1998. His career developed between his hometown, Rome, Milan, and Genoa, where he painted portraits in his studio in the alleys. He exhibited his work throughout Italy and abroad, in cities such as New York, Paris, and Beirut. A realist painter, especially from the 1950s onward, he worked extensively on commissioned portraits and achieved the pinnacle of his output, particularly with nudes.
