The subject of the equestrian monument, or the man on horseback, has very ancient origins. Cornelio Mario Petazzi, known as Elio, was a painter originally from Busto Arsizio, born in 1912 and died in 1998. His career developed between his hometown, Rome, Milan, and Genoa, where he painted portraits in his studio in the alleys. He exhibited his work throughout Italy and abroad, in cities such as New York, Paris, and Beirut. A realist painter, especially from the 1950s onward, he worked extensively on commissioned portraits and achieved the pinnacle of his output, particularly with nudes.
