Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work is a clear example of an Expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with a remarkable exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The landscape is constructed through a simple layering of color applied in compact forms. The colors themselves are not entirely true to reality, lending themselves to a more spiritual than naturalistic interpretation. The composition, constructed of overlapping bands, is so synthetic that it points towards Abstract Expressionism.
Elio Marino was born in Naples in 1941. He studied under Vincenzo Ciardo. His career developed primarily in Milan, where he participated in various groups inspired by abstract and informal art. He has always favored industrial textured colors and the use of a variety of materials. A long-time protagonist on the national and international art scene, he has participated in over 300 exhibitions. He currently lives and works in Pozzuoli.
