Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
Artist E. Borsa creates this double portrait with a highly original and compelling style. The representation manages to be simultaneously realistic and synthetic. Indeed, formally, the artist uses a very subtle graphic style, more pronounced when defining volumes, more subtle when describing shading. Despite this lightness of touch, which is also expressed in transparent, overlapping layers, the two figures possess strong personalities. The artist provides an accurate description of their facial features, including a certain psychological and expressive characterization. Borsa achieves this by also exploiting the tonal variations of the monochrome gray/black setting.
As we can see from the execution of this work, the artist E. Borsa possesses a strong personality. His extremely concise pictorial language has the ability to describe, with few signs, a subject, endowing it with a convincing characterization.
