Domenico Purificato - Owls

The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the representation of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, has no significant elements. This type of domestic subject matter was long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art from the seventeenth century onwards. It was only with the development of nineteenth-century realist movements that everyday subjects were considered to be of the same importance as historical or religious ones.

The work is of excellent craftsmanship and shows how Domenico Purificato is a highly skilled painter even when seeking a completely naturalistic rendering. In this lithograph, we can see, in fact, how the depiction of the two birds in the foreground is perfect and carefully rendered down to the smallest detail. Just as detailed is the Roman cityscape in the background. Everything is executed with very dense hatching that gives body and volume to the subjects, depicting them with complete naturalness.

Domenico Purificato was born in Fondi in 1915 and died in Rome in 1984. His artistic activity began in Rome as early as 1936, coinciding with his role as director of the magazine "Cinema". He took part in six Rome Quadrennials and four Venice Biennials. He was also the director of the Brera Academy until 1980. His style consists of a neorealism inspired by the working classes. He also collaborated with the director De Sanctis.
