Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The work is exquisitely crafted and demonstrates Domenico Purificato's skill as a painter, even when seeking a completely naturalistic rendering. In this lithograph, we note how perfectly and meticulously crafted the two birds in the foreground are. The Roman view in the background is equally detailed. The entire work is executed with dense hatching, giving body and volume to the subjects, portraying them in a completely natural manner.
Domenico Purificato was born in Fondi in 1915 and died in Rome in 1984. His artistic career began in Rome in 1936, coinciding with his time as editor of the magazine "Cinema." He participated in six Rome Quadrennials and four Venice Biennials. He was also director of the Brera Academy until 1980. His style is a neorealism inspired by the working classes. He also collaborated with the director De Sanctis.
