Description of the work
Description of the work
The plate is part of a series of Deruta maiolica whose subject matter is inspired by Roman history. More specifically, this ceramic depicts the legendary episode of Muzio Scevola. During the Etruscan siege of Rome, Scevola had been tasked with killing their king, Porsenna. Having failed in his mission, he punished his hand by burning it in the fire.
The plate fully reflects the aesthetics and characteristics that have made Deruta maiolica famous throughout the centuries. The subject matter, in fact, is developed according to an extremely refined design that, with its abundance of narrative and landscape details, transforms everything into a fascinating idealized patina. The composition is also perfect, built entirely on an impeccable perspective grid. From a formal point of view, the graphic line that constructs the subjects is excellent and, above all, the application of color is extraordinary, with an extremely soft touch that creates light shadows and nuances. From a chromatic point of view, the Deruta tradition is fully respected, with the prevalence of precious blue alternating with orange tending towards gold.
The work is a beautiful example of Deruta maiolica, named after the Umbrian municipality where one of the most important Italian ceramic schools began to form as early as 1227. The production of Deruta maiolica, which spread during the Middle Ages, continued through the centuries, renewing its figurative tradition inspired by historical, mythological, and religious themes, as well as official portraiture. Its peculiarity, which makes it unique in the world, lies in the refinement of the representations and the precious color schemes based on the use of manganese and ramina green, blue, orange, yellow, and red.
