Description of the work
Description of the work
The plate is part of a series of Deruta majolica whose subject is inspired by Roman history. Specifically, this ceramic depicts the famous crossing of the Rubicon River by Julius Caesar's army. This pivotal event, which marked the beginning of the Civil War (49–45 BC), is also remembered for the famous phrase “the die is cast.”
The plate fully reflects the aesthetics and characteristics that have made Deruta majolica famous throughout the centuries. The subject is developed according to a highly refined design, which, with its abundance of narrative and landscape details, transforms everything into a captivating, idealized patina. The composition is also perfect, built entirely on an impeccable perspective grid. Formally, the graphic line that constructs the subjects is excellent, and the application of color is truly extraordinary, with an extremely soft touch that creates light shadows and subtle gradations. Chromatically, the Deruta tradition is fully respected, with the prevalence of precious blue alternating with an orange tending toward gold.
The work is a beautiful example of Deruta majolica, named after the Umbrian town where one of Italy's most important ceramic schools began to take shape as early as 1227. The production of Deruta majolica, which spread during the Middle Ages, continued through the centuries, renewing its figurative tradition inspired by historical, mythological, and religious themes, as well as official portraiture. Its uniqueness, which makes it one of a kind in the world, lies in the refinement of its depictions and its precious color palette based on the use of manganese, ramina green, blue, orange, yellow, and red.
