Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout all eras. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the represented subject, an attempt to faithfully and naturally capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics. As artistic exploration gradually evolved, the physiognomic description of the subject was accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective inquiry into the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction introduced by contemporary art have further supported this type of inquiry.
The style of the painter Alberto Della Casa in the majority of his works is characterized by the development of a predominantly Expressionist language. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extract the true essence of reality and convey it on canvas in a highly eloquent manner. For this reason, he starts from phenomenal reality, but transfigures it through a process of synthesis that reduces physiognomic details and transforms the subjects into icons. In this female figure, too, we can see how the image is motionless and central, outlined with a simple line in a flatness of volumes. All these elements together constitute the Expressionist power of Alberto Della Casa's painting. A power that is also based on a precise aesthetic choice that reaffirms the Expressionist character of his works, namely the tendency toward an accentuated monochrome of brown tones, which characterizes both the subject and the space that contains it.
Alberto Della Casa, known as “Il Cervese,” was born in Ravenna, the city where he lives and works. He trained in Umberto Folli's painting courses and Toni Zancanaro's graphic design courses. Among the most important exhibitions he participated in, we recall those at the Galleria il Torchio in Modena in 1974, the Galleria Varoli in Ravenna for ten years starting in 1975, the Galleria Karima in Ravenna in 1977, the Galleria Teatro Titano in San Marino in 1978, and the Galleria Noisy Leroi in Paris in 1981. His works are featured in public and private collections in Paris, London, and New York, where he lived and worked for a long time. Furthermore, his works are on display at the Ministry of Labour, the Presidency of the Council, and in the offices of the Ceremonial of the President of the Republic in Rome.
