Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the cityscape was already present in Medieval and Modern times, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting from the 19th century. We recall how, immediately after the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also gave great importance to the everyday, to daily life, with a certain predilection, however, towards the frenzy of the city, the crowd, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. The works of the Roman artist Giacomo De Michelis are often dedicated to famous views and monuments of the capital.
In this work inspired by the Colosseum, the artist Giacomo De Michelis takes on an even more experimental form compared to his usual production. In fact, from a formal point of view, the subject is reduced to a more synthetic form, in an essential and primary guise. The expressionistic aspects of Giacomo De Michelis's style are therefore accentuated, but above all, the presence of the pictorial matter and the artist's gesture gain strength. All this can be plastically observed in the work carried out by the artist on the canvas. The matter is so dense that it overcomes the barrier of two-dimensionality and acquires relief. The gesture, in this dense matter, digs furrows which, with great expressive force, structure the architectural subject.
The artist Giacomo De Michelis, born in 1935, had a very adventurous life. During his career he studied under Fusco, Moretti, and Omiccioli, and had the opportunity to meet Dalì, Picasso, and other masters. He was also an amateur actor during the 1970s, appearing in films such as “Lo scopone scientifico” by Luigi Comencini and “Gli altri racconti di Canterbury” by Mino Guerrini.
