Davide Berrettini - Pisa, Square of Miracles

Pisa and its leaning tower are, together with the Colosseum in Rome, the most famous monument in our country, but for me it is above all the city where I lived for some time during my military service.

It's a city I love, so rich in history and so close to the sea.

I wanted to draw an unusual Piazza dei Miracoli, trying to represent something that perhaps had been lost or that few people know about.

Reading its history, I found photos from the 1950s showing a tram line running through the square, so I chose this detail to include in the drawing, imagining how beautiful it must have been to see the outlines of the Tower, the Cathedral, or the cemetery while sitting comfortably on a tram. The tram ran from 1912 to 1957, and line 1 stopped in Piazza dei Miracoli.

But the name Piazza dei Miracoli is actually a recent name, previously it was simply called Piazza Duomo, and it was Gabriele D'Annunzio in his “ perhaps yes, perhaps no ” who called it that for the first time : The Ardea revolved in the sky of Christ on the meadow of Miracles…

The drawing also shows:

• Galileo Galilei, who carried out experiments on gravity right here.
• The Talent Vase, said to have been donated by Caesar
• The Lion's Gate
• The cypresses, in memory of the fallen of the war
• The aviator pigeons, because for me, having been a parachutist here, Pisa is above all the memory of flights and the airport.
