HELL
The story begins with Dante and Virgil, just “ferried” by a technological Charon, who stop at the gates of hell against the backdrop of the walls of Jerusalem.
In all the drawings, which are in black and white, Dante is the only one who is colored (red) because he is the only living one.
Souls are damned and forced to bear the burden of their sin (represented by demons), proceeding towards their infernal circle where they can eternity watch over their torments.
No one is spared the pain that hurts them the most, like Paolo and Francesca who seek an intimate moment of hope for their forbidden love, or Ulysses who is shipwrecked on the mountain of Purgatory in search of salvation.
Among the damned there is a reference to the illustrator G. Dorè or rather to his depiction of the forest of the filthy whose bodies are transformed into trees (canto XIII) – Among these there is a Sienese Lano da Siena.
PURGATORY
Here Dante, accompanied by the Latin poet Statius, arrives at the small beach from which he watches over the souls awaiting their purification, even if distracted by some good soul…
In the foreground is the valley of the princes, while in the background, on top of the mountain, is the Earthly Paradise, his next destination.
PARADISE
Finally, after the call of Saint Peter, souls can realize their desires, perhaps unfulfilled in earthly life: Dante finds Beatrice again, Adam can eat all the apples he wants, Icarus manages to fly on his wax wings towards the sun... or someone simply manages to enjoy a well-deserved rest.
Of course there are also blessed ones such as the Madonna (in gold) or Saint Catherine of Siena and Saint Francis of Assisi, patrons of Italy.
