Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations of artists in every era. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a study of space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then with the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century; and finally with the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work highlights the post-impressionist maturity of the artist Bruno Darzino. The composition is entirely constructed through color, and the brushstrokes have a remarkable structural value. The painter's aim is not to reproduce the sensory data of the landscape, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke comes into play, rich in matter, which, despite the essential nature of the representation, breaks down space into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life on the subject. Thus, on a substantially two-dimensional surface, flattened in the foreground, the objects are constructed by the painter through large, dense strokes of the brush. From a chromatic point of view, moreover, the entire surface of the work is harmonized according to a unifying color palette.
Bruno Darzino (Oderzo, 1922 - Treviso, 1984). He was the nephew of the painter Giacomo Caramel. From his uncle Giacomo, he received his first lessons, studying geometric drawing and perspective and drawing from life. After starting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, the young man was also influenced by his deep admiration for the Roman master Virgilio Guidi. His exhibition activity took place throughout the fifties and sixties mainly in the Veneto region, and particularly in Treviso, where he lived until his death. We recall his solo exhibition in 1954 at the Galleria del Libraio in Treviso, the Provincial Art Exhibition of 1956 at Palazzo dei Trecento, his participation in the Michetti Prize that same year, and the 1963 exhibition at the Galleria Ghelfi in Verona.
