D. Ardegni - Untitled

Social themes in art began to gain prominence in the mid-19th century, coinciding with the spread of social questions throughout European societies. The work of painters such as Millet and Daumier, for example, favored subjects related to life in the fields, factory work, or strikes. In Italy, among the first painters to engage deeply with social themes were Pellizza da Volpedo and, in the contemporary era, Renato Guttuso. The work of D. Ardegni also falls within this trend, with his favorite subjects being inspired by the peasant world.

Ardegni's style is characterized by the development of a strongly expressionist, almost crude, language that reflects the folksy nature of his subjects. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extrapolate the true essence of reality and communicate it directly, unfiltered, on canvas. For this reason, through the application of color, he develops a highly synthesised process that reduces his subjects to dense, textured layers of paint, in which the painter's emotion also plays a key role, conveyed through his agitated gestures. All these elements together constitute the expressionistic power of Ardegni's painting, which is based on a deliberate regression of the pictorial image to a raw state, further exemplified by the accidental nature of the relief material.

D. Ardegni's artistic production focused on the existential representation of humble, popular characters and rural landscapes. This led him to develop a direct expressionism, based on a deliberate regression from pictorial representation and the use of a remarkably textured layering.
