Description of the work
Description of the work
The “Marsiliana” Animal Population Nature Reserve is a prime example of Maremma excellence, located between Follonica and Massa Marittima, where the Carabinieri for Biodiversity breed one of Italy's main native breeds, the Maremma horse.
The equestrian selection center, located on the top of a splendid hill surrounded by olive trees and Mediterranean scrub and covering almost 500 hectares, hosts the evaluation and selection of foals, as well as training and taming.
These splendid horses are used by the Biodiversity Protection Unit - Marsiliana Mounted Unit - for patrols controlling the territory of the protected area, but certain trained individuals are also assigned to the mounted units of the Carabinieri, the IV Carabinieri Mounted Regiment and the prestigious Cuirassiers Regiment.
Today, the Cuirassiers Regiment is a special unit of the Carabinieri, established under the Presidency of the Republic and placed under its high authority. It is composed of select Carabinieri soldiers who possess specific moral and disciplinary qualities, as well as being tall and physically harmonious. The Grand Gala uniform of this Regiment features the distinctive helmet adorned with a lion's head, black hair, and embossed stars along the sides. An undisputed symbol of strength, prestige, and dedication to the Force.
Lara Androvandi was able to visit the Marsiliana thanks to the kind permission of Colonel Giovanni Quilghini, Commander of the Biodiversity Unit of Follonica (GR). She personally admired the beauty of these horses, strong and resilient animals with imposing builds yet gentle and docile natures. Thus was born CORAGGIO, a large-scale work depicting a detail of the eponymous horse's muzzle. A marvelous specimen from the "Marsiliana" Nature Reserve, the artist portrays this work in gouache and graphite on paper, deliberately decorated with a predominance of the colors of the Army: shades of blue, red, and a touch of gold. The precious stars in the background are precisely gold, created, like all the papers used in the work's base mosaic, using the artist's unique water-painting technique, which characterizes much of her work.
In the eye of COURAGE, here is one of the artist's subtle messages that he loves to include in his works. In this case, the typical Cuirassiers' helmet, underscoring the likely prestigious destiny of this splendid specimen.
