Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting is inspired by the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). This beautiful master's copy is based on a prototype by Giovan Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato after his hometown. Sassoferrato was one of the most important exponents of classicism in the 17th century. Among his favorite subjects is the Madonna and Child, which he reiterated in many famous models.
In this painting, we can appreciate the artist's high classicist style. In fact, the work, inspired by Sassoferrato's Madonna and Child, is undoubtedly a product of the great naturalism of the 16th and 17th centuries. This movement, intended to correct the supposed errors of Mannerism, was directly linked to the great masters of the late Renaissance, Raphael in particular. Hence the monumentality of the figures, with their rounded forms, and a total naturalistic rendering that is also expressed in a restrained atmosphere. The Madonna and Child group interacts with the space in a balanced way, with a light sfumato that makes the contours undefined, the flesh soft to the touch, and the hair light in the air. The drapery, which enhances the volumes of the monumental figure of the Madonna, is extraordinary. In terms of color, a certain clarity prevails, akin to a more 18th-century aesthetic.
