Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a study of space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then with the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century; and finally with the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The artist Conti's landscape realism is carried to such extreme consequences that it paradoxically transfers the world he represents into almost a metaphysical dimension. Indeed, we can see how the recording of sensory data, albeit precise, takes on a strongly minimalist character. There is a tendency to represent only the essentials of the reality perceived by the senses. From a formal point of view, all this translates into a plastic emptying of the subject. The space becomes practically two-dimensional and things appear as fleeting visions. Even from a compositional point of view, everything is based on the simplicity of a few regular lines that construct the design.

As we can see from the analysis of this painting, the artist Conti stands out for a landscape conception that is very realistic, but so minimalist as to transfigure reality itself into the metaphysical.
