Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s, encompassing all fields of artistic inquiry. In terms of a discourse more properly related to the visual arts, surrealism presents itself as a desire to explore the human subconscious and pour it into the work of art through a process of automatic writing based on dream analysis. Consequently, surrealist works of art offer a representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a formal rendering of a hyperrealistic nature, precisely to accentuate, paradoxically, the illusory and ambiguous character of the surreal dimension.
In this painting, the artist Claudio Papa decides to follow all the codified rules of surrealist work, drawing inspiration from great masters such as Salvador Dalì and René Magritte. Starting with the title, the artist explicitly speaks to us of a dream, which means that the composition arises entirely from a process of automatic writing and an unconscious vision. This causes the work to take the form of a juxtaposition of heterogeneous elements that are unsettling in their simultaneity. From a formal point of view as well, Claudio Papa adheres to historical surrealism, adopting a hyper-objective figurative language, thus feeding the visionary and illusory sense of the representation. From a chromatic point of view, the entire painting has a good coherence of blue and purple tones.
Claudio Papa is an artist originally from Maiori. He is the protagonist of a varied and heterogeneous artistic production. He trained with numerous experiences abroad, in Paris, but also in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, and London. He has participated in important exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and Art Expo New York.
